How Advocate Rank measures external impact through signals, and what it means to become a champion.

Advocate Rank measures the real-world impact your community members generate through external actions like sharing content, posting on social media, and writing reviews. It's the metric that separates casual participants from true champions — people who actively amplify your brand beyond the community walls.

Key concepts

Before diving in, here's a quick overview of the terminology you'll see throughout this article:

  • Advocate Rank — a cumulative score that reflects how much external exposure a member has generated for your company. The higher the rank, the more impact they've had.

  • Signals ((●)) — the unit that makes up the Advocate Rank. Members generate signals by taking actions that put your brand in front of an external audience. Think of each signal as a measurable indicator of advocacy activity.

  • Champion — a member who has generated enough signals (25) to be recognized as a consistent, high-impact advocate. Champion status is permanent once reached.

How signals are generated

Advocate Rank is powered by Ambassify's proprietary scoring algorithm. It weighs each advocacy action based on how much external exposure it generates for your brand, so the score reflects genuine impact rather than raw activity counts.

At a high level, actions fall into two tiers:

Amplification — actions that extend the reach of your company's existing presence. This includes engaging with content (reacting, commenting, resharing) as well as growing your audience (following a company page, referring new people). These actions help what's already out there travel further and reach more people.

Creation — actions that generate entirely new external exposure. Sharing content to social media, writing an original post, or leaving a review on a platform like G2 or Glassdoor introduces your brand to an audience that may not have seen it otherwise. Creation actions contribute more signals than amplification actions to reflect their greater impact.

The exact weighting of each action is continuously tuned to keep the score meaningful across different types of advocacy programs.

What doesn't generate signals

Plenty of valuable activities happen inside the platform — completing onboarding, finishing learning paths, responding to surveys, or posting in the internal community feed. These are important for adoption and engagement, but they don't generate signals because they don't create external exposure for your company.

The distinction is simple: if it puts your brand in front of people outside the community, it generates signals. If it stays within the platform, it doesn't.

Champions

When a member accumulates ((●)) 25 signals, they're recognized as a champion. This milestone identifies someone as a consistent, high-impact advocate — not just someone who tried one action once, but someone who is regularly putting your brand in front of new audiences.

The 25-signal threshold is deliberately set to filter out one-time or accidental engagement, so reaching it is a meaningful signal of genuine advocacy.

Once a member becomes a champion, that status is permanent. Even if they become less active over time, their past contributions are recognized.

Where to find Advocate Rank in the platform

In the Overview Report, you can find a graph that shows you how the total Advocate Rank is evolving over time, within the date range you selected.

When you go to Members, you can sort the member list (ascending or descending) based on their Advocate Rank. By opening a member's profile in the backend, you will also see their Advocate Rank next to their Lifetime Points and Points.

A specific AdvocateRank filter can also be used to find a specific subset of members, and this is available both on the Members page as in the audience filters for campaigns and messages.

FAQ

Why only external actions? Advocate Rank is designed to measure actual business value: the reach and visibility your brand gains through employee advocacy. Internal engagement (surveys, learning, community posts) is important for adoption but doesn't directly expand your brand's external presence.

Can a member's rank go down? No. Advocate Rank is a cumulative lifetime score. Signals are never lost. Champion status is permanent.

What happens once a member becomes a champion? The score keeps accumulating. Members continue generating signals for every external action, which feeds into the leaderboard and helps you identify your highest-impact advocates over time.

How are signals different from points? Points are earned through all platform activities (completing lessons, participating in campaigns, etc.) and drive the rewards program. Signals are generated exclusively through external actions and drive the Advocate Rank. They're separate systems that measure different things.
